Day 1 of the Roadshow - Cardiff
Armed with CV and cover letter templates, interview tips and advice for younger and mature job seekers, plus hundreds of bags for life and thousands of pens, the Roadshow hit Cardiff.
Our bright orange double decker bus was set up in Queen Street, Cardiff (You literally couldn’t miss us).
There was several local
employers with us offering a variety of roles. Halifax was on the hunt for
customer service candidates. HSS Hire was advertising a range of roles such as
fitters, drivers, technical engineers and more. We had recruitment companies
such as Acorn offering a variety of positions from drivers to HR. We also had
Go Wales recruitment, which specialises in graduate and student recruitment. Non-profit
organisation ccha (Cardiff Community Housing Association) also joined the
roadshow in Cardiff, as well as Capgemini which was offering IT
Apprenticeships.
By 10.30am employers were being swaped with job seekers eager to find work.
We also had 5 workshops running on the day and places filled up quickly. Just over 100 people turned up to the workshops and they were a great success.
Sue who attended the ‘Top
CV mistakes & how to avoid them’ workshop said she received ‘practical
advice, hints and tips.’ Overall she said she found the workshop 'really helpful.'
Liz attended the ‘Common interview questions & how to answer them workshop.’ Before the workshop, she had no idea what sort of questions she would ask employers. Post workshop, she was full of confidence and had some useful ideas of what questions she could ask in future interviews.
Overall, Cardiff was huge hit. Around 300 people turned up and got CV, cover letter and interview tips and advice. We had our resident bus Journalist, the award winning Tricia Phillips reporting on all the days action for the Daily Mirror. Local journalists from the Echo and Western Mail also joined in on all the fun (so keep an eye out...you may end up in the paper).
Next stop on the Roadshow Birmingham...See you Monday 10th June at Victoria Square!
Day 2 of the Roadshow – Birmingham
Another great success today, even though the sun wasnt shining, the Fish4jobs team were out in force trying to get Birmingham working.
We had local employers such as learndirect, National Apprenticeships
Service, HSS Hire, Recruit 4 Talent and South & City College Birmingham . Speaking
to the employers, it was clear that the roadshow was proving successful as they
were meeting lots of potential candidates.
South and City College Birmingham said ‘they found being part of the roadshow allowed them to spread the word about Apprenticeships and made meeting candidates more accessible.’
HSS Hire had this to say…
Councillor David Willis for South Yardley dropped by and he had this to say about our event…
We are in Birmingham again tomorrow (Tues 11th June) at Victoria Square from 10am-4pm. So if you missed us today, come down and see us tomorrow for some advice or just to get a Fish4jobs bag for life & pen.
Day 3 of the Roadshow - Birmingham
Come rain or shine the Fish4jobs team were back in Victoria Square, Birmingham. Getting jobseekers to meet local employers and giving them practical CV, cover letter and interview advice! We had the same employers as day 1 in Birmingham plus Active Assistance. They were on the hunt for potential care assistants, live in careers, support workers and personal assistants.
It was an excellent turn out today and we had a steady flow of job seekers all day. We also had a surprise visit from Heart FM. They came down to get all the gossip on the giant orange bus and spoke to a few of the employers as well as eager job seekers.
A local college brought some of their student
along and it was great to see so many young individuals actively involved and engaged
with the workshops and employers.
The college tutors said ‘the kids were responding well to the workshops and that they kept them engaged. The literature that was provided was helpful, particularity the pieces on social media – how it can effect your career opportunities both positively and negatively. The roadshow really engages with younger people, excellent idea.’
Another young job seeker found the advice and workshops really helpful…
The best news of the day was delivered to us by job seeker Khilan. He attended 3 of the workshops held on Monday 10th June (Top CV mistakes & how to avoid them, Common interview questions & how to answer them & Mature job seekers: Making your experience count) and took away lots of tips and CV advice. He returned to see us today with a new and improved CV and a job interview. Such amazing news and it is such a boost to know that the careers roadshow is having a positive effect on people.
We have also had some great feedback on Twitter today….
Overall, I think it goes without saying that Birmingham was a massive success. We hope to replicate all the success of Birmingham in Manchester tomorrow. The bus will be parked in Albert Square on Weds 12th June. Dont miss out!
Day 4 of the Roadshow – Manchester
Busy day today! We set up in Albert Square and even before the bus was open for business we had eager job seekers waiting to find out more.
Lots of employers joined us today
such as Travelodge. They had a list of over 20 vacancies to fill in the
surrounding area. They said ‘we are not looking for any particular skills, you
can teach people skills – its all about the right attitude.’
We also had Future directions who said the event was excellent, they got a really good response from job seekers. ‘We have met some great candidates and are pleased with the turn out today.’
Workshops were full today and we got lots of positive feedback…
21 year old Sarah said ‘the workshops were really helpful, it reassured me that what I have been told at Uni is right and that my CV is looking good and professional.’
16 year old Connor said the event for him has been ‘a big success, a massive help.’
We had press coverage from our
resident bus journalist Tricia Phillips as well as the Manchester Evening News.
We even had out first Fish4jobs team picture…but you will have to wait for that
beauty to appear in the Daily Mirror.
We will be back in Albert Square, Manchester tomorrow from 10-4pm...see you then :)
Day 5 of the Roadshow - Manchester
We set up shop in Albert Square for day 2 of the Manchester roadshow.
We had Recruitment Agency Alexander Hancock join us today. They were looking to fill a number of commercial, office based roles. As the day progressed they said ‘we have found a few people that we are really interested in, so going to push those CVs. The day has been really successful, really good.’
Roberts Jackson solicitors were also pleased with how the Manchester roadshow had gone. They were advertisingTelesales and Administrative roles. They said ‘before we even got back to the office we had lots of CVs emailed over and there are several we are going to follow up.’
Lots of positive feedback from workshops today too…A mature woman attended the 'Top CV mistakes & how to avoid them' workshop in the morning and then came back in the afternoon with an improved CV. She had recently been made redundant and hadn’t updated her CV in about 10 years so she said she found the workshop ‘really helpful, I feel more confident about getting my CV out there.’
Even though it poured with rain today, it did not deter job seekers. Manchester can be deemed a success. We have had lots of great feedback and introduced lots of great candidates to potential employers.
The roadshow will be visiting Liverpool One tomorrow from 10-4pm. You can see how helpful we have been in Cardiff, Birmingham and Manchester so don’t be shy, come down for some great CV advice and meet potential employers.
Day 6 of the Roadshow - Liverpool
Even though it rained the Liverpudlian people were lovely and delighted to see our giant orange double decker bus. The Fish 4 jobs team braved the rain and wind and handed out hundreds of Fish 4 jobs bags (which went down a treat).
We had a new employer join us today...Skills for Health. They were offering Apprenticeships within the NHS. They said ‘we have found a few potential candidates that we have got to fill in application forms which is a good start.’
The Chief Operating Officer of Travelodge had positive feedback regarding the roadshow and why it was a good idea for them to get involved he said ‘the face to face interaction with potential candidates is crucial as it is imperative that they have the right attitude and are also enthusiatic about Travelodge. Its also important that they get to know us, it’s a two way street.’
We also had a vist from some local
MPs. MP Steve Rotheram (Walton) said in his constituency there are around 5000
unemployed and around 1250 of those are young people. ‘The roadshow is a good idea;
anything that can facilitate people into jobs can be welcomed especially for
the younger generation’
MP Bill Esterson (Sefton Central) also turned up and said that ‘bringing local employers to the area is a good idea.’
We had media coverage from out resident bus journalist Tricia Phillip, reporting for the Daily Mirror as well as from the Liverpool Echo.
We are back in Liverpool One (near John Lewis) tomorrow from 10-4pm for the last day of the roadshow...So dont miss out!
Day 7 of the Roadshow - Liverpool
The last day of the roadshow today and the sun was shining (yay)!
Had lots of great feedback from those who came to visit the Fish4jobs bus.
22 year old Rachel said the ‘literature you can take away with you is really handy. Its good advice, simple things that you wouldn’t necessarily think of doing such as which way round your work experience and education go on your CV.’
35 year old Dan took away some CV advice he said ‘he had received direct advice such as don’t list hobbies on your CV that aren’t relevant to the role your applying for, in fact don’t list anything that is not relevant including your D.O.B.’ He said he found the roadshow really helpful and thinks we should visit his town more often!
We had some good feedback from employers too. The National Apprenticeships Service held a workshop in the afternoon and said that they found it really useful to get young people who have been through the apprenticeship scheme to talk to other youngsters. The roadshow provided NAS with the opportunity to do exactly that, so they found it very beneficial.
Future Directions said the roadshow is beneficial for them if they got one person through their system and into a job. They had seen some promising candidates in Liverpool that they were really excited about, so fingers crossed.
The roadshow was a huge success, we handed out hundreds of Fish4jobs bags and pens and we had great fun along the way...
