Fostering Solutions is an independent foster care agency, based in the United Kingdom. They are committed to ensuring the children and young people in their care thrive.

There are thousands of children requiring foster care across the United Kingdom and Fostering Solutions aims to help reduce this foster care shortage. They recruit, assess, train and support their Foster Carers to provide high quality foster care placements. Their Carers really make a difference to a young person’s life.

Fostering Solutions staff provide local support for Foster Carers from regional offices across the UK in the North West, North East, Yorkshire, Midlands (including East Anglia) and the South of England in addition to Wales and Scotland.

 

Who can foster?

Being able to foster isn’t about whether you’re single, married, gay, lesbian, heterosexual, divorced or cohabiting. It isn’t about whether or not you already have children, or what your religious beliefs and practices are.

Fostering is about being able to respond to a child and helping them thrive.

In order for us to ensure that the children and young people are safe and secure however it is very important that their Foster Carers meet a number of requirements.

Do you meet the requirements to become a Foster Carer?

• Applicants must have life experience and be over the age of 21. There is no upper age limit and as long as you’re fit and healthy you may apply.


• All applicants require a good level of spoken and written English.


• You must have a spare bedroom at the time of application. If you are having an extension or plan to convert the attic, this work must be done before you apply.


• We don’t ask for qualifications to become a Foster Carer – your life experiences, parenting skills and the qualities you have developed as a result are equally important.


• If you have lived overseas, it will be necessary to undertake statutory checks in the country where you resided.


• If you have been convicted of certain offences including violence or crimes against children you will not be able to foster. However, other minor offences may not affect your application. You will need to disclose any convictions during the assessment process. If you do not disclose something which subsequently comes to light, your assessment with Fostering Solutions maybe closed and you may be unable to proceed any further.


• In order to assess your skills to foster, it is vital you are honest and open. The assessment process is very thorough and you’ll be asked about many different aspects of your life.

Well, what can I say about the Fish4jobs road show? In my opinion it’s been a resounding success as the volume of those seeking employment advice superseded all our expectations!

Throughout the week we met with hundreds of individuals from those who had been unemployed for weeks, months and years to those who had been Police Chief Inspectors, and Greenfield Project workers, the diversity was unbelievable. The common denominator for each and every one was that unemployment is debilitating and can happen to any one of us at any given moment...scary I know!

Hopefully by showing our presence and support we have helped individuals move forward armed with a wealth of knowledge, the information to help them sell themselves to maximum effect, the truth to help them know where they have been going wrong, and the honesty to show them that a positive attitude really does produce results.

In some of our locations we helped to secure interviews for those who had matching skills and qualifications, an array of employers who kindly worked alongside us were offering some fantastic opportunities for those seeking employment, a huge thank you goes out to them.

I want to thank Fish4jobs and the Daily Mirror in supporting the unemployed in a way that enables face to face contact, in this virtual world this week proves how much it is needed.

Saturday 10th September, 2011 – Northumberland Street, Newcastle 

All good things come to an end and our exciting Roadshow was no different. After a 6 day tour across the country, our big orange bus of course had arrived at its final destination. A jobseeker's task can be challenging but having a Fairy Jobmother to point you in the right direction, can make it a fair bit easier.

Some of the recruiters who joined us on the road today included:

• The AA: Seeking new recruits for Insurance sales and customer service roles.
• Nissan: Currently recruiting Team Leaders, Facility Engineers, Process Quality Engineers, Maintenance Technicians and Production Supervisors for their Sunderland Tyne and Wear plant.
• Npower: Accepting applications for customer service jobs at their Contact Centres in Peterlee, Thornaby and Houghton le Spring.
• Premium People: Offering permanent and temporary blue collar, industrial, trades, hospitality and catering roles for some the region’s largest employers
• National Oilwell Varco (NOV): Offering a selection of roles in Engineering, Finance, HR, IT, Manufacturing, Marketing and Sales.

The aim of the Road show was to reach out to jobseekers and help them a push with CV reviews, one-to-one advice sessions with the Fairy Jobmother and our in-house recruitment experts, and to bridge the gap between jobseekers and recruiters in each city.

Looking back over the last 6 days, Fish4Jobs Marketing Director, Sarah EL-Doori feels it has been a great success. “We've reviewed over 3000 CVs and given career advice to thousands of job seekers across the UK, helping them to be better prepared in their job search”,she said.

Fish4Jobs Roadshow – DAY 5

Friday 9th September, 2011 – Briggate Street, Leeds

It’s not every Friday that a bright orange bus with a Fairy Jobmother aboard, appears on Briggate Street in Leeds. The long queues that had become a common sight outside our bus each morning, had once again begun to appear out of thin air and Lifetime, Brook Street, Yorkshire Water and Barclays set up stalls outside our bus to answer questions and brief jobseekers about job opportunities currently in stock.

As the day progressed, CVs got reviewed, advice was handed out and hope began spreading round, the clouds weren’t the only thing shifting. Many had begun to start planning their career shift. It is not uncommon to set off in one direction and then have a change of heart. Yet, as daunting as the thought of shifting careers is, in the longer term is can prove more fulfilling and help you achieve greater levels of professional success. If you don’t really enjoy what you do, this will impact on your overall performance.

If you are thinking of shifting careers, there are a few things to think about so your transition is smooth:

• Make sure you actually want to change career – evaluate what it is you don’t like about your current situation – the job itself, the organisation, its culture, or even your boss? It might be that you actually like the role or industry so should look for a similar job at a different organisation.

• Understand what motivates you – what really makes you come alive? Look at what you enjoy doing outside work - what are you passionate about? Now try to apply that to a career. Ask friends to describe you as well as they often see things we don’t.

• Focus on your strengths and understand your weaknesses – psychometric tests are a great way of identifying your strengths and weaknesses. Instead of trying to overcome your weaknesses, leave the things you’re not good at to someone who is and focus on your strengths.

• Identify that dream job – match your motivations, strengths, preferred working styles and goals to specific roles, industries, and types of organisations (small or large, public or private, entrepreneurial or traditional etc.)

• Write a plan – actually putting something down on paper makes it real and forces you to think about how you are going to achieve it. Write down your career objectives with realistic targets.

• Get your finances in order – often people start their career shift journey but then go back to their original roles when money gets tight. Your shift may involve a pay cut, so ensure you have enough money to tide you over.

• Surround yourself with success stories – not only are they are a great source of inspiration but they’ve done it themselves so are also a great source of ideas and practical tips.

• Be positive – instead of focusing on what you don’t have (lack of experience, resources), focus on what you do have (passion, commitment). There may be obstacles in your path; rather than viewing them as insurmountable, ask yourself what you need to do to surpass them?

• Don’t let rejection get you down – whatever your career change, you are going to get rejected at some point and most likely at the beginning. View every no as one step closer to a yes.

• Do something today (and every day) – the hardest part can be getting started so do something towards your goal today. And it’s easy to get sidetracked or give up, so give yourself a task each day to keep you on track.

Thursday 8th September 2011 – Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester

Despite the wind at Piccadilly Gardens, springing to life in their bright orange t-shirts, our team of experts - joined by the Fairy Jobmother and recruiters like the AA and Brook Street - were ready to brave Day 4.

If you are struggling to find work that matches your capabilities, perhaps your CV needs work. Often the problem is not the lack of skills but the way that you present it on your CV.  A strong CV is vital, to get a job that’s right for you.

Still on a high from the turnout and success of the last two days on the road, we braced ourselves for another day of excitement as we halted at Paradise Street, Liverpool. We had expected queues of hungry job seekers but we were certainly overwhelmed by the amount of talent out there, looking. While for some candidates it was their confidence that they’d lost, for others it was a case of just not finding the right job for them. Good thing we had the Fairy Jobmother and our in house recruitment experts on board to help.
